BCC & Architectural Association Workshop at Highgate Cemetery

27/02/2025
BCC Heritage Diploma Stonemasonry students visited Highgate Cemetery as part of a collaboration with the AA School of Architecture.

Students from both organisations had a fascinating tour of the cemetery led by conservator and stone mason Neil Luxton. Neil showed all the aspects of stone decay and restoration, as well as giving a live demonstration of inlaid lead lettering.  Students also got to see original drawings in the cemetery archive.

We then hosted an introduction to carving session back in the Building Crafts College workshops, where the architecture students got to have a go at carving a range of stone types to understand their different properties, led by our staff and students.

Organised by artist and AA lecturer Juliet Haysom, the event received glowing feedback from all involved, with all students keen to extend their learning through further trips and activities. Highgate Cemetery is currently expanding its activity programme, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and we look forward to further opportunities to work with them in the future.
