A five session class for those with some experience in carpentry, ideal for those that have attended our carpentry basics course
Build skill and confidence working with power tools!
This practical 5-week course is designed as the perfect follow-on from our Carpentry Basics Evening Class, giving you hands-on experience with a range of essential power tools commonly used for home improvement and DIY projects.
You’ll learn how to safely use a number of power tools while developing the skills and confidence needed to complete carpentry tasks at home. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to take on your own woodworking projects with more confidence and greater knowledge of power tools and their uses.
Spaces are limited, with only 6 spots on this course. A smaller class size allows each student to spend more time working with each power tool, allowing your skill level and confidence to grow.
Previous carpentry experience is necessary for this course as you will be building on fundamental carpentry skills.

Throughout this course you’ll receive practical training in the use of:
- Mitre Saw
- 2nd Fix Pin Gun
- Sander
- Portable Planer
- Battery Trimmer/Router 1/4inch
- Jigsaw
- Multi Tool
- SDS Hammer Drill
What You’ll Learn
Week 1: Introduction to Power Tools & Safety
- Understanding different types of power tools and their uses
- Essential power tool safety and best practices
- Cutting and fixing timber lippings to a door blank
Tools Used: Mitre Saw, Pin Gun
Week 2: Advanced Finishes
- Sanding and finishing timber lippings
- Fitting decorative beading to create detailed door designs
- Developing accuracy and finishing skills
Tools Used: Mitre Saw, Pin Gun, Sander
Week 3: Routing, Drilling & Fixings
- Using a trimmer/router to create decorative moulded edges
- Learning how to drill into brickwork and tiled surfaces
- Selecting and using the correct plugs, screws and fixings
Tools Used: Mitre Saw, Pin Gun, Sander, Trimmer/Router, SDS Hammer Drill
Week 4: Shaping & Trimming
- Making a shaped shelf using a jigsaw
- Trimming a door to size with a battery planer
- Introduction to the versatility of the multi-tool
Tools Used: Jigsaw, Battery Planer, Multi-Tool
Week 5: Project Completion & Skills Recap
- Complete any remaining practical tasks
- Refresh key techniques and safety knowledge
- Review the tools covered throughout the course
- Gain confidence to continue working independently at home
By the End of the Course You Will:
- Safely operate a range of commonly used power tools
- Understand which tool is best suited to different applications
- Be able to drill, trim, cut, shape and finish timber accurately
- Have the confidence to carry out a variety of woodworking and DIY projects at home
- Gain practical experience through hands-on activities in a small group setting
- Some prior carpentry experience is necessary
- This course is intended to be taken after our Carpentry Basics short course, but some prior carpentry or DIY experience is sufficient
You will need to bring:
- Steel toe-capped boots (to be worn at all times while on course)
The cost of this course is £300

After this course you should be able to safely and confidently operate a variety of power tools, ideal for more advanced DIY projects

- For any BCC alumni of study programme or apprenticeship they can get a 20% discount on the short course fee.
