Short Course – Introduction to Wood Carving

Discover the timeless craft of wood carving in the inspiring surroundings of one of London’s most established specialist craft colleges

Whether you are a complete beginner or looking to develop existing skills, this hands-on evening course will introduce you to the techniques, tools and traditions of decorative wood carving. Under the guidance of expert tutor Saena Ku, you will learn how to transform timber into beautiful carved work while developing confidence with traditional carving tools and processes

Over ten weeks, you’ll explore a range of carving techniques including lettering, incised decoration, relief carving and sculptural forms. Through practical demonstrations and individual guidance, you’ll learn how to safely use carving chisels, understand timber and grain direction, and develop the hand skills needed to bring your ideas to life

As the course progresses, you’ll work on your own carving project, allowing you to apply your new skills while creating a unique piece of work to be proud of. Along the way, you’ll gain an appreciation of traditional ornament, form and craftsmanship, building a foundation that can support further study or independent carving projects in the future
