This course is split into four days, with each day being able to be taken individually.
INTRODUCTION TO ART HANDLING
Location: Building Crafts College, Kennard Rd, London E15 1A.
Equipment required: all equipment will be provided
Facilitators: Sarah Titheridge & Phil Wilson-Perkin
The main concern when handling artworks is to maintain the safety of the artwork or object, our work environments, ourselves and those around us. The aim of this session is to minimise the risks involved in the handling of art works and objects.
The handling of works of art, and valuable, fragile and unique objects, requires a specialist approach, with careful planning, proper resources and lots of training and practice. In this 1 day session we cover the range of activities required when handling works of art and objects in a short classroom presentation followed by practical exercises:
– How to handle artworks and objects safely and securely in accordance with H&S regulations
– Identifying artistic mediums and their handling considerations
– Examining support material before handling such as condition reports, installation guides, method statements etc.
– Planning your work, in particular the required movements and routes
– Identifying and using the correct equipment to move art and objects
PACKING ART & ARTEFACTS
Location: Building Crafts College, Kennard Rd, London E15 1A.
Equipment required: knife able to cut thick cardboard eg. Stanley knife, pencil, tape measure, notepad/paper
Facilitators: Sarah Titheridge & Phil Wilson-Perkin
In this session we will learn how to minimise the risks involved in the packaging of art works and objects.
A properly packed container, whether it is made of paper, cardboard, plastic, or wood, is critical to ensure artwork or objects inside the container arrive safely to their destination or stay safe and stable in storage. It is also critical that the packaging in no way changes the materiality of the artwork or object. Improper packing can cause an object to be damaged or destroyed by using the incorrect materials against their surfaces or has not been substantial or secure enough to eliminate movement in transit.
In this session you will learn how to to Identify the appropriate materials to use to safely and securely pack art and objects for storage & transport and will put this into practice by packing artworks in the following:
– soft pack – packing a 2D artwork in tissue, polythene and corner supports
– card wrap – custom made cardboard container around a soft pack
– crates – different types, their different uses and how to pack them
– travel frames – how they are made and how to pack artwork in them.
INSTALLING ART & ARTEFACTS
Location: Building Crafts College, Kennard Rd, London E15 1A.
Equipment required: drill, drill bits for screwing and drilling (these can be provided but if you have your own we would encourage you to bring it along), pencil, tape measure, notepad/paper.
Facilitators: Sarah Titheridge & Phil Wilson-Perkin
The idea behind installing artwork is that we are displaying artworks in the manner in which ensures the work is safe and secure at all times, in the manner in which the artist intended, without drawing attention to how it is installed.
In this one day session we will examine the fundamentals of how an artwork or object is installed safely and securely in a space by examining the:
– Different artistic mediums and the appropriate hardware to use
– Different surfaces on which art or objects are installed eg. types of walls, plinths, etc.
– Different arrangements of displaying artworks, such as hanging multiple 2d artworks and the use of exhibition furniture such as plinths.
– Equipment which can be used for installation
– Method statements and installation guides
You will practise adding fixings to various different types of 2D artworks and installing them on a wall using different types of artwork hanging fixings with different wall fixings.
AUDIO VISUAL & SOUND INSTALLATIONS
Location: Building Crafts College, Kennard Rd, London E15 1A.
Equipment required: notepad and pencil/pen
Facilitators: Kenji Takahashi & Phil Wilson-Perkin
This is an introduction to audio visual and sound art installation which will equip learners with an understanding of
– the correct equipment based on artistic specifications
– understanding projector throw, alignment, etc.
– how to set up an AV & sound installation in specific spaces
Beginning with a classroom presentation we will examine the following:
SOUND: The theory of sound, how it works, how we (AV technicians) talk about sound, what we commonly do with sound (in an exhibition AV setting);
VIDEO: The theory on video, covering resolution, aspect ratio and frame rate, what information to look for when we specify equipment for a job. You will also cover video displays, with a little more attention on projectors and how to calculate placement and throw distance for projectors.
Which will be followed by a practical session where you will be tasked with specifying equipment for various AV installations based on equipment specifications which will be followed by a discussion of choices. This builds the understanding that there is alot of equipment which can be used to produce the same results whilst demystifying av equipment specifications sheets.
Art Technical work is predominately physical in its nature therefore if you have physical constraints which mean you struggle with physical activities please discuss this with the course leaders prior to booking to ensure we can accommodate you.
