COURSE DESCRIPTION

Learn the timeless craft of stone carving and create your own hand carved relief in stone

Discover the art of traditional stone carving in our specialist stonemasonry workshops. Whether you are a complete beginner, a hobbyist, or interested in heritage crafts, this practical course offers a unique opportunity to learn the skills that have been used for thousands of years all across the world

Guided by our stone carving tutors, you will learn how to use traditional hand tools safely and effectively while exploring the techniques used in architectural and decorative stone carving. Working with soft limestone, you will develop an understanding of three-dimensional form before progressing to carve your own traditional low-relief or sunk design

Throughout the course, you’ll gain hands-on experience in:

Using traditional stone carving tools and techniques
Understanding the properties of natural stone
Creating depth, texture and detail in your work
Developing confidence working in three dimensions
Producing a finished decorative stone carving to take home with you

By the end of the course, you will have created your own stone carving piece while gaining insight into the wider world of stonemasonry, conservation and heritage crafts. It is an ideal introduction for anyone considering further study or simply wanting to experience the satisfaction of transforming raw stone into a finished work by hand

Our stone carving class is limited to only 6 students at a time, this allows each student to have more 1:1 time with our tutors, and provides a more focused and personalised learning experience

REQUIREMENTS

No prior experience is necessary for this course

Steel toe-capped boots must be worn at all times during the course, these must be provided by students

This course runs on Thursday evenings 17:00 – 19:30

This course is perfect for those looking to progress into a career in stonemasonry as it gives a well rounded introduction into techniques and practises found in the industry

This course is also held in the same workshops as our mainstream courses, giving attendees the closest possible experience to being a full time BCC student

Please note that the College reserves the right to modify or cancel courses prior to their start date

DISCOUNTS

For currently enrolled BCC students (on a study programme or apprenticeship) a 25% discount will be applied on the fees for a short course taken in the same academic year that they are enrolled
For any currently enrolled short course student who wants to enrol on a full or part time study programme (19+) in the subsequent academic year we offer a 50% fee rebate on the cost of their short course.
For any BCC alumni of study programme or apprenticeship they can get a 20% discount on the short course fee.
