This is a practical, workshop based course that offers a comprehensive introduction to furniture making with hand tools and also some power tools and static machinery. Students will undertake the construction of small end table in hardwood for taking home at the end of the course. Students will learn:
- General design principles
- To use marking out tools to lay out joinery.
- To use a handsaw, chisels and planes to cut and fit basic woodworking joints.
- How to sharpen edge tools (chisels, plane irons).
- How to hand plane timber from sawn.
- Some basic timber technology and how woodworking joints and furniture are assembled to allow for timber movement.
- How to clamp and glue up your components.
- How to prepare timber surfaces and finish with oil.
- Lots of tips and tricks and how to fix your mistakes!
Please bring:
- Steel toe cap boots (TO BE WORN AT ALL TIMES WHILE ON COURSE)
- H or 2H pencils
- pencil sharpener
- rubber/eraser
- notebook/paper

Start date is Saturday 11th March, run for 4 weeks through to Saturday 1st April
Half term will be on Saturday 8th and 15th April
Class cancelled due to college event on 22nd March
The course will then run for a further 5 weeks from Saturday 29th April through to Saturday 27th May
Half Term will be 3rd June
Return on 10th June to 24th June
